Patricia Carey : Mariah Carey's mother
Maiden name : Patricia Hickey
Citizenship : American (Of Irish parentage). She was raised in Illinois (USA)

Patricia's dad died a before she was born. She was raised in a very strict catholic environment and discovered at an early age that she had a gift for music. Even though she had never known her father, she had apparently inherited his musical gift. After high school, she went to New York and got a job at the New York City Opera. Not long after this, she met her future husband, Alfred Roy Carey, of African and Venezuelan parentage. When they got married, Patricia's mother disowned her. Nobody else in the family was supposed to know about their union. She even called on a priest to convince her daughter to give up the idea of getting married. Her behavior actually did nothing to consolidate this union. Indeed, Mariah's grandmother would stubbornly stick to her position. She'd constantly make some cutting remarks too. For instance, she used to offer Alfred a soap bar for Christmas!

They eventually divorced and Pat was forced to juggle different jobs to meet her family needs. She worked as an opera singer, a jazz singer, a vocal coach and even a pet shop manager !

Patricia is the one who discovered her daughter's talent and supported her. One day, Patricia was rehearsing the Italian opera "Rigoletto," when she missed the cue; Mariah didn't. Indeed, she sang it perfectly at the right point. Mariah was only 3. Mariah has always described her relationship with her mother as very collusive. They would even happen to reverse the roles: Sometimes, she was the mother and sometimes it was Mariah. However, Mariah has already admitted that she felt different from her mother. As regards her singing lessons, her mother supported and encouraged her a lot. However, Patricia was unconventional. Like a best friend, she has always been there for her daughter. Nevertheless, Mariah has never felt exactly like her mom. Something has always made her feel different from her. Among other things, Patricia is interested in esotericism; she tends to be a little bit mystical sometimes. Mariah remembers that, when she was a child, one of their acquaintances committed suicide. Mariah and her mother went to this person's house to call upon the spirit of the deceased. Mariah recalls that it was quite a frightening moment for such a little girl.

Anyway, Mariah and Pat are still the best friends in the world. When she became famous, Mariah bought her a very beautiful house; and not a day goes by without them exchanging some messages on their pager.
