"You know, Trey comes from Florence, SC home of the fish sandwich!" Here's the kind of sentences that Mariah uses to introduce her best friend and backup singer, Trey Lorenz.

Born to a history teacher (Bernice) and a training center director (Lloyd) who both sang at church, Trey became rapidly fascinated by music. After having taken a few piano lessons, he met Mariah while she was recording "There's got to be a way" for her first album. Indeed, Trey's friends, Patrick and Billy were some backup singers for this song and Trey used to come and get them at the studio. "I heard someone singing all the high, top notes with me, and I'm like, 'Who is that?' I turned around and it was Trey. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship," Mariah recalls.

Thus far, Trey has worked on all her albums. In 1992, his duet with Mariah "I'll be there" brought him fame. He released his 1st album with Epic (Sony Music). Mariah contributed to it as a producer and a backup singer. To date, he has only released one album even though he worked with Mariah on another song named "Pisces." This song was supposed to feature on an album set for release in 1999; to date, nothing has been released yet.



However, Trey sang "Make you happy," a song written for the "Men in Black" soundtrack, featuring Mariah as a backup singer. She appeared under the nickname Honey B. Fly, because the lyrics were too explicit and she didn't want the public to associate her name with this song.

Anyway, Trey is still Mariah's backup singer and follows her during her concerts or promotional tours. When they sing in duet, it's always a memorable moment, because, as Mariah says, "Trey and I have known each other for so long that we have so many private jokes. And then, when we're on stage, he looks at me or does something when nobody else realizes it, and we both start laughing, or…ok, sometimes I do the same thing to him (…)."
